May has a lot of pet holidays, and we’d thought we’d highlight a few for you to celebrate this month.
May is National Pet Month so let’s celebrate our pets all month long! This month-long holiday aims to promote pet adoptions, responsible pet ownership, and the personal benefits of owning a pet. Buy your pet a new toy, help alleviate a chaotic, stressful routine if you have one, make sure they get playtime and spend extra time cuddling this month. Please think about adoption if you’re interested in another pet. Read this article about why you should consider adoption.
The month of May is Chip Your Pet Month – Be sure your pets have a microchip, so many lost animals get returned home because they have a chip. Here is what you need to know about microchipping your pet.
May 3 is National Specially-abled Pets Day – This unique holiday is when pet advocates and rescue organizations promote adoption of pets that need a bit more attention. They could be blind, deaf, missing a limb, or maybe needing a pet wheelchair. These pets need a home and family just like any other pet. If you’re patient and think you’d like to help these pets find their forever homes, contact your local shelter and open your heart to a special needs pet, you won’t regret it! Here is a great article about some of the benefits of a special needs pet.
May 5 – 11 is Puppy Mill Action Week & Be Kind to Animals Week – Volunteer at your local animal shelter and spay/neuter your pets. Here are some steps you can take to stop puppy mills. Click this link for a very interesting and visual history of Be Kind to Animals week.
May 11 is National Animal Disaster Preparedness – Regardless of where we live everyone needs to be prepared for a disaster. Please do it now before a disaster happens. This guide is an excellent place to start.
May 14 is National Chihuahua Appreciation Day – This small breed has a gigantic personality. Find out more about this amazing dog breed here; this just might be the dog breed for you.
May 23 is World Turtle Day – Turtles have been on Earth for 200 million years, and now many are in danger of becoming extinct. World Turtle Day, created in the year 2000, hopes to bring awareness to the plight of turtles and increase our knowledge and respect for them. Learn more about turtles and tortoise here. Also, this is the time of year when turtles are active. If you see one in the road and it’s safe to pull over and help them, please do! We need more turtle advocates. Remember to take them to the side of the road they are headed to because if you don’t they will just turn around and cross the street again!
May 30th is International Hug Your Cat Day – A great holiday to encourage cat owners to give their cats a hug and some extra attention. However, people without cats are left out of this holiday, so maybe we should call it Hug Someone Else’s Cat Day!
Enjoy these holidays with your pets. We are always looking for a good excuse to celebrate every pet!
