March is Poison Prevention Awareness Month—a timely reminder that many everyday household items can pose serious risks to our pets. From human medications and cleaning supplies to certain foods and plants, and most commonly these days,  THC/CBD products, accidental ingestions happen more often than we think.  Most poison emergencies are preventable with a few simple precautions.
Store all medications (both prescription and over-the-counter), vitamins, supplements, gummies and household chemicals in secure cabinets well out of reach. Be especially mindful of pill organizers, purses, backpacks, on countertops or coat racks—curious noses can find their way into unexpected places.

We also strongly encourage every pet owner to save these two critical numbers in your phone today:

If you suspect your pet has ingested something potentially harmful, call one of these poison control centers immediately.  Have a list of everything your pet may have ingested with bottles, packaging, or photos of labels whenever possible.  Knowing the exact product name, strength, and quantity involved is critical in helping poison control or your veterinary team determine the safest and most effective treatment plan quickly.

They will provide case-specific guidance and create a report for your situation. It’s a good idea to save your case number and bring it and/or your report with you if determined veterinary care is needed.  Your veterinarian will often contact the same poison control resources to confirm substances and dosages as part of your visit. Having that information ready can save valuable time in an emergency.

Poison emergencies are stressful, but preparation makes all the difference. Save these numbers, store items safely, and don’t hesitate to call for guidance.

For emergencies we recommend you contact one of these local emergency centers:
